FLOG is a privacy-first outdoor journal that transforms your photos into searchable Field Logs enriched with historical environmental conditions such as weather, river flows, tides, sunrise/sunset, moon phase, and more.

FLOG automatically enriches your outdoor experiences with historical context that would otherwise be difficult—or impossible—to remember later. Instead of just saving a photo and a note, FLOG builds a complete Field Log that can include location, historical weather, river conditions, tides, sun and moon information, and other environmental data, making each outdoor experience searchable and more meaningful over time.

FLOG is a portmanteau of the words "Field" and "Log". It's also a nod to the somewhat antiquated portmanteaus of internet jargon like "blog" (web log) and "vlog" (video log). And lastly, it's an inside joke for those fishless days when it feels like you're just "flogging the water".

Yes, however, some environmental data sources will only provide data for the USA, including but not limited to any data sources in FLOG related to water (e.g., tides, river, etc.).

Yes. FLOG is a one-time purchase, and Apple's Family Sharing automatically extends your purchase to up to five additional family members at no extra cost. Once you've purchased FLOG, any family member in your Apple Family Sharing group can download and use the full app on their own device.

Note: Family Sharing for purchases requires that the purchaser has "Purchase Sharing" enabled in their iCloud Family settings. If a family member isn't seeing FLOG as available, check that Purchase Sharing is turned on under Settings → [Your Name] → Family Sharing → Purchase Sharing.

Your Field Logs are stored on your own device.

FLOG was designed with a privacy-first philosophy and does not maintain a cloud database of your personal logs.

No.

FLOG does not upload your photos. Your original photos remain in your Apple Photos library.

FLOG links your Field Logs to the photos you select. Your original images remain in Apple Photos.

FLOG uses your selected photos to create Field Logs and retrieve the date, time, and location associated with each outdoor experience.

Location allows FLOG to determine where your activity occurred so it can retrieve historical environmental information relevant to that location.

If a photo doesn't include location information, FLOG will ask you to choose the activity location manually before environmental information can be retrieved.

No.

The first photo selected when creating a Field Log becomes the Primary Photo for that log. This helps preserve the original record of your outdoor experience.

Yes.

You can update your notes and edit the Activity Category after creating a Field Log.

Your Field Log is still created successfully.

If environmental data cannot be retrieved, FLOG simply omits that information while preserving the rest of your log.

The Field Log remains.

If the original photo is removed from Apple Photos, FLOG will indicate that the photo is no longer available while keeping the rest of your log intact.

Deleting a Field Log removes only the log itself.

Your original photos remain in Apple Photos.

You can browse and view your existing Field Logs offline.

Some environmental information may require an internet connection when a new Field Log is being created.

FLOG uses (weather and atmosphere), USGS Water Services, NOAA Tides & Currents, USGS Watershed Services (water), and Apple Photos and Apple CoreLocation (device/system). Celestial data is computed on device.

Apple's WeatherKit provides historical weather data back to August 1, 2021. For field logs created with photos from before that date, weather will be omitted, but all other environmental data will be captured in the log.

Additionally, while not a data limitation, field logs adhere to a specific radius distance rule when presenting optional Tide Station and River Gauge data—75 km and 50 km respectively—around the primary photo's geolocation.

FLOG does not sell your personal information and does not build advertising profiles.

Privacy is a core design principle of FLOG. Your outdoor experiences belong to you.

Not in the current version.

Future versions may introduce optional cloud synchronization. If that happens, it will be opt-in.
